Top 5 Accomplishments!
1. Fostering a Green Culture
Partnerships, speakers and field trips have exposed the HCMS community to various environmental issues and have sparked an interest to think globally and act locally.
2. Student Driven Initiatives
Students who came to HCMS with an awareness of environmental issues have sparked interest among their peers to take actions including, Waste-free Wednesdays, Do-one-thing Wall for Earth Day, a recycled art contest, Green Tips on the morning news show, Earth Hour participation, a school energy audit, school garden, to highlight a few.
3. Comprehensive Recycling
In a conscious effort to reduce the amount of waste sent to landfills, Harper's Choice students have encouraged
the community to recycle everything possible by putting recyclable containers in every classroom, starting Waste-Free Wednesdays in the cafeteria, stacking the recyclable lunch trays, collecting books to be reused by others, collecting used batteries and empty ink cartridges to be recycled, and promoting a paper-less environment.
4. Energy Conservation
Students enthusiastically embraced efforts to reduce energy consumption by creating and placing light switch covers on EVERY light switch in the school, participating in a school Earth Hour, and utilizing county specialists to investigate ways to reduce energy usage in our building.
5. Planning a School Garden
A group of eighth grade students has initiated a school vegetable garden by planning with Howard County Master Gardeners Program, surveying the school property, developing a site plan, creating a scale drawing and a budget, with the hope of its become a community resource that teaches the important environmental benefits of eating locally grown, healthy food.
