School-wide Celebrations
DOT (Do One Thing) Wall in the cafeteria initiated by student Green Team to celebrate Earth Day on April 22,
2014 and give students and staff members the opportunity to share what they can do individually and
collectively to help the environment. Student-created plans for the DOT wall are shown below.

Student-produced Green Tips on HCTV throughout the year
to promote Waste-Free-Wednesdays and importance of
reducing, reusing and recycling. Students researched environmental topics, wrote scripts, then pre-recorded the segments in the school's TV studio, which were later aired on the morning news show.

Student-led Earth Hour initiative on March 28, 2014. Students requested that each teacher spend the last hour of the school day with their overhead lights turned off. The Media Center and Cafeteria also joined in the initiative. Building Services will graph the schools hour by hour energy usage and the students will share the results with the school community via HCTV. The students have decided that this initiative should be continued throughout the year, not just on Earth Hour Day. Data from the Office of Energy Management, HCPSS will be available the week of April 21, 2014 to allow students to evaluate the data and report back to the HCMS community. This is an initiative by students in grades seven and eight.

"I want HCMS to become a Green School so that more people will know about
the problems with the environment and what we can do to help."
